Project: Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham

This is a purpose built rail vehicle manufacturing facility of approximately 479,000ft2, comprising of production, logistics, testing & office accommodation with associated external works, external rail sidings for 110no. rail vehicles, 1km electrified test track, rail connection to the Network Rail branch line and 11kV ring main & 132kV traction supplies. The project achieved BREEAM Excellent & was handed over ahead of schedule in readiness for Hitachi to deliver the first trains onto the Great Western Main Line in 2017.
A challenging project, requiring a collaborative approach to problem solving and risk management working with all the major stakeholders including Hitachi Rail, Network Rail, local authorities, utility companies and local neighbours / landowners as well as the design and construction teams. A significant amount of time was invested in the planning / pre-construction stages developing the client’s brief, strategies to de-risk the project & optioneering to drive down Capex. Our role involved complicated negotiation of the development agreement, network rail implementation agreement, consultant appointments, formal reporting of key project deliverables / milestones & financial management of agreed budgets.
